What is voice therapy?

  • Strokes and brain injury can change the way your voice sounds by weakening the muscles needed to produce speech.

  • Signs of voice disorder include the following changes:

    • Volume: quiet, loud, or too much variation

    • Pitch: monotone or too much variation

    • Rate of speech: slow, fast, or variable

    • Breath support: running out of breath frequently, heavy breathing, more frequent breathing

    • Vocal quality: hoarse, breathy, strained, rough

    • Resonance: sounding like your voice is “coming out of your nose,” or your voice sounding as if your nose was congested

    • Articulation: speech sounding imprecise or slurred

  • Our therapy can help strengthen the weakened muscles that cause these changes and teach you strategies to improve the affected subsystems.
